Mix mayonnaise, sour cream, mustard, lemon juice, and chives in a bowl. Cook asparagus until just crisp. Meanwhile. Beat egg whites with the salt and pepper until soft peaks form. Sprinkle with sugar and beat until stiff. Fold egg whites into mayonnaise mixture. Spoon over asparagus which has been drained and placed in a shallow casserole. Heat under broiler until top is lightly browned, about 4 minutes. Serves 10.
